The Sanctuary and Hermitage of Greccio, also known as the “Sanctuary of the Nativity Scene,” is a Franciscan site located in the municipality of Greccio (Rieti). It is the most famous of the four sanctuaries of the Sacred Valley of Rieti. One of the most important places in Franciscan history, it was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi and is called the “Franciscan Bethlehem,” because it was here, in 1223, that Saint Francis created the first Nativity scene. It is part of the Way of St. Francis.

The ancient Sabine city of Trebula Mutuesca (or Trebula Mutusca), mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid, was located in Lazio, in today’s province of Rieti, within the territory of modern‑day Monteleone Sabino, at an elevation of 496 meters above sea level.
